What Philadelphia sports fans have to thank for? In the spirit of Thanksgiving, and the next party (which occurs during the Christmas / Chanukah), I had to stop and reflect on the first question. In the last week, the Eagles lost McNabb, Andre Waters, and Jack Ferrante (the variety of Out of the '49 and '50 championship teams). We could mention the injury to Chris Webber and Allen Iverson to a tooth (thank God not miss any practice), but we will try to keep everything that is significant.
This past Thanksgiving, has been hard, sad in many respects. Most of the city has officially bail in the football team, everyone has made the hockey team and the basketball team is not worthy of mention. With the exception of the award Ryan Howard MVP of this week, what are the good people in the City of Brotherly Love grateful?
Well, what about Rocky VI? The film has received some good reviews, and hell, why can not a 60-year struggle for Rocky Balboa world heavyweight championship? George Foreman did and became in the grid world's most successful salesman.
Did someone say Ken Hitchcock? For all those people who knew about hockey Hitch is a bad deal, coach has gotten a head coaching job, the mecca of hockey in the world, Columbus, Ohio. Yes, I said Ohio. And yes, he is coaching against his former team tonight. Do not I like to see Hitch get a win? Come one, you all are the same people who booed Santa Claus right?
Black Friday is something to be thankful. All major chain stores around Philadelphia, which offers customers "special" offers $ 500 HD LCD TVs at a price of cashmere socks money. Watching people line up to a mile long outside of Office Max at 3 am for a half price box of staples is something to be thankful. Be thankful that these imbeciles are all over the country and not just in Philadelphia. So I'm extra grateful.
Outside of our families, we have PlayStation 3, H3, and the 3 Stooges (never leave of the classics). For all these things, I am grateful. Heck, maybe someday I will be grateful for the championship in Philadelphia. However, many people are beginning to wonder if that will happen during their lifetime.
Billy King has become the Matt Millen of the NBA. Andy Reid has become the Wayne Fontes of the NFL. And the coach Flyers general manager … Wait a minute, which is their coach and general manager? A special "thank you" goes out to Dave Montgomery and the rest of the property of the Phillies. Thanks by mediocrity and low expectations.
Oh well, maybe December, better known as the month to be much better after November. Anyway, I will always be grateful to cheese and the NFL package on DirecTV. Sometimes we need to simplify life and finding joy in small things, and sports in Philadelphia no small thing.
