What is it about Americans, why do they love the underdog? Why did the movie “Rocky” hit home with so many of us? How is it we so often relate with the one in the midst of the struggle, the one that won’t surrender, the one who battles against the odds and through perseverance triumphs in victory. It is this person that makes us feel alive, that brings out our character that we’ve buried inside.
That strength and driving force is still there, sometimes we just have to be reminded of it. “God, I love the underdog!” I always love to watch their refusal to quit, their determination and that attitude of commitment, it reminds me that inside is some of the same.
We must not let that die, it’s more than hope, more than prayer, in fact it is that very adversity that builds true strength of character. When “Rocky Balboa” took on his challenge, and stubbornly stood to face the ultimate challenge, we all felt our own challenges and immediately identified with him, but why?
You see, there is a part of us, inside us all, one that perhaps feels trapped, controlled, and prevented from realizing our dreams. When we see another conquer their demons, champion over adversity or seize the day, we are one with them and in their glory, we feel as if nothing is impossible, it inspires us.
Our mind says; “don’t underestimate me!” and don’t count me out, I will never quit. Next, time you find yourself siding with the underdog, consider why and understand it is as much about them, as it is about you. In closing I wish you continued success, I know you can do it.
